phase two

phase three

Emails and Location update

Sent out emails to the crew to remind them about next week and to let them know about a meeting on Saturday.

I also sent out several emails to (6) prospective grips, I will let you know as soon as hear back from any of them. I also emailed Kyle to see if he has any interest in the remaining positions.

As of this moment, we will not be able to use Corey's room as David's Room location.
Therefore, we need to find another working location ASAP.

Bradley, I was curious as to whether a room in your house would work or not. Just a thought, but I'm sure you've already been over it.

I called Rochelle about this and left her a message, I believe I remember her saying that she has a few ideas in case this happened. We will get a replacement location locked by the end of the week.

Tomorrow, I will be:

discussing back-up locations with Rochelle
getting the ER equipment in order
getting prices from Fotokem
tracking down the glidecam
responding to any reply emails
preparing for Tuesday's meeting (scheduling, transportation, meals, etc.)

I'm excited to get all of these things done tomorrow, but for now...

I sleep.

Fotokem Processing

I called Fotokem on my break and while they couldn't give me any prices until tomorrow, they did say that it would be a two-day turnaround for processing 100ft of 16mm.

I left a message with Corey and will know by tonight about using his room.

That's all for now, I will bring more updates later in the day.

Update, Jobs for the morrow

Sorry I haven't been too active these past couple of days, work along with getting ready for the return trip has sucked up a great deal of my time.

How did scouting go? I hope that everything went well in spite of there being no producer. I'm looking forward to hearing the news

I called Fotokem on Friday, but I didn't call early enough, so I will call back tomorrow.

Just sent Bradley the crewlist so that he can fill in his camera crew. Once I have their information, I will be emailing the crew tomorrow to remind them about next Monday/Tuesday and the remaining production days.

Bradley, if I could get the list of equipment needed for next Monday/Tuesday, that would be fantastic. I need to email Dr. Fisher so that we can arrange the pick-up.

So, my current to-do list for the morrow:

Talk with Fotokem
Confirm with Corey about location
Get camera crew names and send out emails
Get equipment list and email Dr. Fisher
Talk Rochelle about design progress

Brilliant.

Delineations

Trying to help keep communications clear and open

I think I need to state my position on this project directly (apart from actor and writer).

I am the Executive Producer. I will be the chief financier of the project. I am contributing 3000 dollars to the project, which will likely be more than 50%. Therefore, if the movie makes any profit in festivals or elsewhere, at this moment I reserve the right to divvy up the funds as I see fit.

I am not a creative producer. As far as all the aesthetic decisions go, I may give my input to Bradley, but the decision is ultimately his and his alone. The only aspect of the creative process that I do lay claim to, is the right to wield my power as pertaining to any sculptural changes to the script. If Bradley or anyone else wants to make a change to the script that I feel is not in-line with my original decision, I will veto it. But, barring script changes, all the creative power, from location to color scheme lies in Bradley's command.

Okay, forgive me if that sounded a bit terse, but I thought it would be better just to state it and clear up any doubt as to my role behind the scenes on this film.

I dreamed of DtDD last night!

I'm too tired right now to write about the dream, so I'm just posting this as a reminder to post it as soon as I have the energy.

But man alive, it was good.

the SWORD

the sword featured near the end of the film has begun to be constructed by my awesome brother Trevor Clarke. This is the rough; he is grinding all sorts of details into it on thursday.

Locations, Locations, Locations

Flight home from Boston went well, though the first movie was Spiderman 3...

Contacted the city hall and confirmed usage of Creekside park across from Biola.

Went from there and contacted the graveyard down the street and was treated extremely well by the owners, who granted us use of there beautiful Memorial.

Excited for the shot list/schedule!

Disappointed that the Sox lost and that I couldn't make the meeting.

But that won't get me down.

Wednesday to-do's:

Talk with the Vaughns and confirm location availability
Look over meeting notes
Email more churches about sponsership
Watch the Sox beat the Angels

for realZ

ok, the movie is for real.

kasey and rochelle are on the ball... met with them last night, and you know it's a real movie when they're about.

that and the fact that i just bought 2 brand new 500 GB hard drives for storage... i believe that each one should store about 38 hours of HD, so that's just enough to have two copies of everything (methinks...)

anyway, meeting with bobo tomorrow to pore over the schedule (always an arduous task, but at least it's with a cool dude).

doubling down

we're kicking into high gear this weekend...

i'm working 25 hours at the satellite company this weekend and therefore i have plenty of time to SHOTLIST and sketch all sorts of concepts.

meeting with rochelle (and maybe kasey?) to go over the plan for her design genius.

dante rocks at writing.

lee's upping the ante these days as well.

BOBO is going to 1st AD! i'm stoked to have someone so talented and so asian to bounce my ideas off...

we have some cast and some not, but we should be fine as far as the first weekend goes!

Thoughts while my roommate is snoring

At synagogue, I sit next to the same couple every week. They're probably in their late thirties/early forties. The husband is a rather excessively rotund gentleman -- very, very large.
Throughout the Torah study every week, he holds her hand. They're always holding hands, and whispering little comments to one another. I say hi to them every week, and we hold petty little conversations, but their focus never extends too far beyond the scope of each other's interest.

I observe them and I wonder; what force on earth could possibly keep them this close-knit? What type of love is this? How could this have come to be that this odd couple is so profoundly attached to one another?

As we make this film, (and admittedly, it is a bleak film for the most part) I am constantly needing to remind myself what is at the core of our film. The answer is the same answer as to why the couple is so intensely attached to one another.

Paul states that three ideas remain forever, and are of utmost importance: faith, hope, and love. "But the greatest of these are love." Faith and hope are logical to me. For all intensive purposes, they are very pragmatic ideas. Faith keeps Christianity vital and refreshing, while hope forever bears an impenetrable optimism for the future. But love makes no sense.

God loved His creation, so He allowed Himself to be maligned, tortured, and murdered by that creation He loved. It doesn't make much sense. The sensible thing would be to exalt Christ, the only sinless man to ever walk the earth, the only truly righteous man. Yet, because He first loved us, He allowed His son to be denigrated instead.

"Does the Devil Doubt?" skims just the surface of asking God how He could possibly love us as individuals. Love makes no sense, and so we may question it. This is not an act of defiance, but rather, an admittance that love is so powerful and complex that it goes beyond all our abilities to reason.

DtDD is not a curse, or a proclamation against God, but an emotion-driven question of why God loves us -- or perhaps more intuitively, "How can God possibly love me?"

I believe that asking these questions will help us on our journey of sanctification, until the day when God's love will completely define our worth, and clothe us in mercy.

Back in Action!

I'm back and in full force. Both Rochelle and Kasey are online for production design and Rochelle has recommended a great property master.

Unfortunately, Saddleback Church does not have the room in their budget to financially support our film though they do support the film and have encouraged our passion.

I am definitely really excited to be apart of this project as it unfolds.

communication

well, i'm here at my internship trying to get some work done on our project, but communication is stalled. we're trying to use this social/film networking site called rushcut.net that my friend justin anderson put together, but it's fairly difficult to navigate...

i really want to get cracking on the creative side of things but we're disconnected... ugh.

mmm... urgency

first of all, dante, i'm really liking this blog so far... the personality. the fact that we're having a discussion with each other framed in the third person...

i'm pretty stoked to work on 'does the devil doubt?' aside from allowing me much more opportunity to rebel against the proper conventions of capitalization, it is going to be a fantastic experience with a group of people i am happy to work with and/or get to know better.

'doubt' tackles issues that i have wrestled with, everything from doubting god to struggling with disaster to death of a friend. one thing i am exceedingly excited to work on-- hallucinations. i LOVE hallucination scenes. yes.

and by the way, dante, i did enjoy the changes in the new draft... do you think it's still improving?

My first post will be about....

...draft #8 of DtDD that I just finished.

In this rewrite I turned Elaine, the no-nonsense producer of David Brock's "Trinity!" into an excessively combative mirage in the final scene of the film. I gave her several curse words to spew out. The positive aspect of this rewrite is that it should bring a higher level of intensity to the last act of the film. The possible negative aspect is that it may a) clutter the final scene with yet another mirage of David's psyche and/or b) give the whole film a cruder feel that may cause people to focus less on the internal questions being asked and more on the external language.

I guess I'll just wait to see how Bradley reacts to the draft before we decide to scrap the new material or not.

Time keeps on ticking...
